Tipstaff of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers & Dyers of Edinburgh

This tipstaff has a medal attached to one end. The reverse of the medal bears the arms of the Incorporation of Bonnetmakers & Dyers.

The tipstaff was a symbol of the authority invested in the Incorporation’s Officer by the Deacon and Master Court. The Officer could present his tipstaff and show the medal in order to identify himself and assert his authority.

The tipstaff was carried in the Great Reform Jubilee Procession in Edinburgh in 1832.
